ANGELS

It may appear that the biblical teaching on angels should stand as a subject on its own. But the truth concerning this theme is usually in the setting of angels as ministering spirits, given to the church to aid it in its warfare (Heb. 1:14). So we approach the idea in this context. Several brief things can be said about them:

  1. JESUS AND ANGELS

Angels were present when Jesus came to earth at His incarnation and also at the time of His resurrection and ascension. Moreover, we are assured they are to accompany Him at His return in glory to earth the second time (Mat. 24: 31). During Jesus’ earthly life there are only two occasions when angels appear, and both of these occur at the beginning and end of His earthly ministry. (Mat. 4:11; Lk. 22:43). Jesus certainly believed in them and taught concerning them.

  1. UNCERTAINLY AS TO DETAIL

Because angels belong to the sphere of Heaven, it is very difficult for men to appreciate fully in earthly terms their nature and function, and the bible given as only a little knowledge about them.

  1. THEIR BASE REALM

Angels belong to the Heavenly court and services of God the Creator, and their primary function is to be His ambassador or messengers by doing and revealing His will in both Heaven and on earth (Ps. 103:20; Mt. 28: 2; Lk. 1: 26). In all of this they seek to express praise and worship to Elohim (Rev. 5: 11).

  1. THEY AID MEN

From time to time, angels have appeared to men (Gen. 32:1) and assisted and strengthened men in their work for God (Jugs. 2: 1; 1Kings 19: 5-7; Dan. 6:22).

  1. THE END OF TIME

At the end of time, when they come with Jesus at His personal return, they will be instructed by the Lord to be the executioner of His wrath to unbelievers (Mt. 13: 24-30, 39-42).

Little, actually, is revealed in the scriptures concerning angels and other Heavenly beings (the cherubim, seraphim, the creatures of Revelations etc.). We know they are creatures of God who serve and worship Him in His very presence. They make some excursion into the world, the coming of Jesus (LK. 1: 26-37). One thing is clear, we shall see them some day and worship with them for eternity.

  1. THE ‘ANGEL OF THE LORD

This phrase occurs many times in the Old Testament. Here is a manifestation of God. The ‘Angel of the Lord’ is not an ‘angel’ in Created sense we have discussed here. He is actually God Himself.

THE SONGS OF ANGELSTHE SONGS OF THE ANGELS AND THE SONGS OF ALL CREATURES (REVELATION 5:11-14)

First notice their position:

“And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;” (v. 11)

The redeemed saints are sitting on the Throne; then host of angels standing. As we have learned, the twenty-four elders signify the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles, which in turn represent all the redeemed saints. As angels were created to serve the redeemed saints (see Heb.1:14), there is a distinction between the two. They praised Jesus thus: “worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing” (v. 12).

Since the angels have never fallen and were made for a different purpose, their song does not refer to precious Blood, being purchased or becoming priests. It’s simply a song of praise.

Following the song of the angels, all creatures sing thus: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!” (v. 13).

When all these hymns are ended, the four living creatures respond with “Amen,” and the twenty-four elders bow down and worship.

It seems to me that the beautiful song of the three is the song of the redeemed saints. Isn’t God’s divine grace wonderful? We’re the one who rebelled against Him and consequently received the greatest love and destiny from God. Part of our response should be beautiful songs of praise to God not to our own canal life, and He wants to hear us in praise Him than pray to Him.

Thus, the preparation for God to reclaim the earth by rapture will soon be completed. As soon as our Lord opens the seals of the scroll, the curtain on the stage of the great tribulation will finally be drawn up. He is coming back. Shalom!
